Why 2
Just Isn't Good Enough

Imagine: winter is coming and you
need to get winter tires. But you don't want to spend a lot
of money for them. I mean, why should you? You only use them
once a year. And now you've got some tire salesman telling
you that you have to get 4 of them? Come on. How can you
believe some guy trying to earn a commission selling you
tires?
Well, the short and simple answer is
that you can believe him. Believe me, I'm not a fan of
spending money needlessly, but it's no use being a
cheapskate if it gets you in a car accident. If you want to
have a safe driving experience in winter, you'll need to get
four winter tires.
The reason for this is simple. You
get much better traction with winter tires on each wheel
than with only two. Then why is there the common belief that
it's all right to get only two winter tires.
Actually, it used to be quite common
for people to use only two winter tires. The reason for this
is that most cars used to have rear-wheel drive. Winter
tires were manufactured at that time to work well with
rear-wheel drive only cars. A car owner would put winter
tires on the front and then depend on the rear-wheel drive
for extra traction in the back.
Of course, this logic no longer
applies since most people have front-wheel drive on their
cars and vans. But old habits die hard and people still
think they should put only two winter tires on their cars.
This could have grave consequences in an emergency, as your
ability to handle your car will be decreased.
And even if you have all-wheel drive
or rear-wheel drive, most of the winter tire manufacturers
recommend installing four winter tires on your car. This
gives you the most control over your car in the event of an
emergency situation on the road. You'll have the best
traction control that way. With only two, you can be in a
situation where only half your car reacts to your control.
You may find your car oversteering and understeering in
certain conditions.
So, if you are buying snow tires
for your car, please get a set of four winter tires and ensure safe
winter driving.
