What You
Need To Know About Studded Snow Tires
A lot of people believe that studded
snow tires are the way to go. They give you better traction
by keeping your tire on the road. And they are especially
popular on motor bikes. But there are some things you need to know
about them. Most importantly, are
even legal in your state?
What Are
Studded Snow Tires?
Studded winter tires are similar to
regular snow tires. But in addition they have tiny metal
studs embedded in them. These tiny studs give the tire better
traction. They "bite" into the surface of the road, giving
your tire good adhesion. Its said that the adhesion of a
studded snow tire is double that of a regular snow tire.
The studs in the studded snow tires
also break up the ice on the road. This makes it safer for
other drivers who don't have studs in their snow tires. By
breaking up ice on the road, they clear the way for other
vehicles. Although important, I wouldn't buy a studded tire
just for this reason.
The
Controversy Surrounding Studded Snow Tires
If studded winter tires are so
superior to regular snow tires, then why doesn't everyone
use them? The reason is simple. They aren't legal in every
state. Some states have outlawed them. So, you may not be
able to buy them. And you won't be able to add studs to your
current snow tires if they are not legal in your state.
Why are studded snow tires illegal?
Good question. Those studs that break up the ice on the road also
break the asphalt. And as far as I know, state governments
don't like spending money to repair roads after every winter. Therefore, many states
have simply outlawed them.
Some states will let you use studded
snow tires during the winter. But you must remove them as
soon as there is no longer any snow on the road, or risk a
fine. This can be an inconvenience, but you might consider
it given the improved traction of a studded tire.
So, although studded winter tires
provide great traction, you may not be able to
use them. Its a good idea to check with your local state government
to see if they are banned in your state.
